Samsung announces ICS update plans for Galaxy devices

It is no news that Samsung plans on releasing the latest update of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich to the Galaxy S II. Through a Twitter post a month back, the brand said that the smartphone would receive the upgrade, but there was no confirmation as to when the rollout would actually take place. According to an announcement by Samsung, the time frame for the rollout of Android 4.0 has become fairly clear with the brand stating that it would release the OS to the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note in the first quarter of 2012.
Official launch on the 18th of October
Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II to receive ICS by Q1 2012

Through the blog post, Samsung states that other Galaxy devices would receive ICS soon after it was available on the S II and the Note. The brand does not just aim to upgrade their smartphones, which also include the Galaxy S II LTE and Galaxy R, but also a range of tablets as well. The tablets set to receive Android 4.0 are the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

There is no specified date as to when the rollout would take place, but they have mentioned that separate announcements would be made about the details of the upgrade schedule for each market. They state that this depends on the market situation and carrier requirements.

It appears that Samsung is really pushing for most of their top tier handsets to get Ice Cream Sandwich, before other manufacturers start updating their devices. The competition is really hotting up and the race is on as to which manufacturer gets Android 4.0 on their handsets, excluding the Galaxy Nexus, of course.

Windows Phone Tango update to release at CES 2012

For the tech world, the year always kick starts with CES. Companies already seem to have geared up for the CES 2012 to be held in Las Vegas. News has it that Microsoft will show off its moves with the Tango update for Windows Phone, reports Dgui. On January 13, the Nokia Lumia 719 and Lumia 900 will be demonstrated too. This isn’t all, the company will also launch Windows Phone Apollo or shall we say the highly anticipated release of Windows 8 (Windows 8 is the codename) by the mid of the year at the Nokia Connection 2012.

The Tango update will bring in LTE support and compatibility with small screens. On the other hand, Apollo adds support for dual-core processors, high-res displays, NFC and more. Apparently, the Nokia Connection 2012 will also show off the next gen camera-centric N8 and also the first Nokia tablet running on Windows 8. To know how much truth it holds, let’s wait and watch.

Mujjo touchscreen gloves let you access your phone and stay warm

Dutch-based, Mujjo, an online start-up has launched a new set of touchscreen gloves with a spin on high-tech conductivity. These gloves allow the wearer to "use all fingertips, knuckles and even the heel or the palm of the hand" to operate their touchscreen devices. Touchscreen winter gloves in previous seasons have only allowed the wearer to operate screens with one or two fingers from each hand. These new gloves by Mujjo provide the wearer with more options for use, since all areas of the glove are usable.

Mujjo's touchscreen compatible winter gloves work with all capacitive touchscreen devices, including the iPhone and the iPad as well as BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC and LG phones. Capacitive touchscreens work by sensing the conductive properties of your skin. Mujjo gloves are made of silver-coated nylon fibers that are knitted into the fabric of the glove. These silver-coated nylon fibers make the gloves conductive and therefore, touchscreen compatible. The Mujjo touchscreen gloves are available at the Mujjo online store for € 24,95 (approx Rs.1,729). They come in two unisex sizes: Small / Medium and Medium / Large and are made from stretchable fibre.

Google-Mozilla contract renewed for three more years

Firefox, like other browsers used Google as their default search engine, courtesy a deal between the two. Google pays a great sum to make Google Search visible on Firefox. This deal between Mozilla with Google had expired in November, this year, and soon after there were talks of whether this contract would be renewed, considering reports that Firefox was no longer the second most used browser, and was replaced by Google's very own browser, Chrome.

An announcement on the Mozilla blog  now confirms that the deal has been renewed, and has been extended by three years. Gary Kovacs, CEO, Mozilla said, “Under this multi-year agreement, Google Search will continue to be the default search provider for hundreds of millions of Firefox users around the world”. There is no mention of what kind of money was paid to renew the contract. Google pays Mozilla an estimated $103 million, each year.
Finally available for download

Firefox 9 was just released yesterday and the leaked binaries were available well before the official announcement. There were also reports about Chrome being the most secure browser around. However, another firm, NSS Labs rubbished this report saying that it was biased and Google was the one who funded its claims.
