Kindle-wielding Amazon dips toes into physical world

Amazon.com Inc is dipping its toes into the physical world as the largest online retailer offers more products in stores that may benefit from hands-on interaction with shoppers.

Analysts said the move may be inspired by the success of Apple Inc, which has hundreds of its own glitzy stores to show of iPhones, iPads and other gadgets and accessories. Quidsi, an online retailer Amazon acquired in 2010, opened its first retail store in Manhasset, New York, last year to sell expensive cosmetics and perfumes under the BeautyBar name.

Amazon also plans to open a physical store in its home town of Seattle in coming months to showcase and sell its growing line of gadgets, including the Kindle Fire tablet, industry blog Good E-Reader reported this weekend.

At a conference in late 2011 run by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, some industry players hinted that Amazon might launch a retail store presence like Apple to let consumers test its gadgets, according to Cowen & Co. analyst Jim Friedland.

"The primary goal of the test is to determine if a physical retail presence can accelerate sales of Kindle devices and follow-on consumption of digital content at an attractive return on invested capital," Friedland wrote in a note to investors on Monday. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment. Such moves are a major departure for Amazon, which has thrived by competing aggressively on price with traditional retailers that are saddled with the cost of leasing physical stores. But Amazon's line of Kindle devices may sell better if consumers have a chance to try them out before buying. These gadgets are already sold at other retailers, including Target , Best Buy and Staples . However, Amazon is likely looking at the potential benefits of having its own stores, analysts said.

If Amazon brings out other gadgets, like a smart phone, or a larger tablet, having an Amazon store will help the company explain how to use these gadgets and the other services tied to them, Friedland said. Apple Inc , which Amazon now competes against in the tablet market, has had huge success with its chain of retail stores which numbered 361 at the end of 2011.

Getting ready for the retail store?

"I don't expect to see a bunch of Amazon Supercenters anytime soon, but seeing Apple's success with retail and realizing that Amazon is more than just an e-tailer now, I think it's smart for them to explore the opportunity," Colin Sebastian, an analyst at RW Baird, said.
Amazon often tests new concepts in the Seattle area, the analyst noted.

Amazon has to collect sales tax on online sales in states where it has a physical location. A retail location in Seattle would not trigger new obligations like this because the company already collects sales tax in Washington state, Sebastian noted. Amazon also collects sales tax in New York state, where Quidsi's BeautyBar store is located in an up-scale shopping mall called Americana Manhasset.

"It's very much about the brick and mortar retail store experience," said Andrea Sanders, creative director at Americana Manhasset. Consumers can have their hair blow-dried at the BeautyBar store's "Blow Dry Bar" or get facials, peels and waxing services from a licensed aesthetician in the "Treatment Room," she explained. "That's an experience that you can't get online," she added in an interview with Reuters. Such efforts could dent Amazon's return on invested capital and hurt the company's positive working capital dynamic, Cowen's Friedland warned.

Amazon shares closed down 2.4 percent at $183.14 on Monday. Wal-Mart Stores , the world's largest traditional retailer, generates a return on invested capital, or ROIC, of 19 percent, the analyst noted. Amazon's ROIC is typically about 35 percent, although returns are currently lower because of big investment projects the company is pursuing, according to Friedland.

Having retail stores may also dilute the competitive advantages of Amazon's online retail business, including vast selection and convenience, the analyst added. "The initiative is just a test and a national rollout is not a forgone conclusion," Friedland said. Amazon launched an online grocery store called Amazon Fresh in Seattle almost five years ago and the company has not expanded that because the business has yet to generate an attractive return, the analyst noted.

Nokia dazzles Warsaw with another fancy Lumia 800 launch

Nokia is burning some serious dough, in trying to promote their Lumia series and their next stop after London, was Poland. Their display at London was nothing short of spectacular, especially with Deadmau5 providing the sound track. Despite the biting cold weather, quite a big crowd had gathered outside the Staszic Plaza in Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
New updates available
Now invading Poland!

Nokia put on a good show for the attendees with the similar 3D projection light show it did in London. However, it wasn’t as epic as the London event; at least I don’t think so. This marked the official availability of the Lumia 800 in Poland and we can’t help, but feel cheated. Where is our light show, Nokia? India is clearly one of the largest consumers of Nokia devices and it has been so, for years now. Even with Samsung’s and HTC strong presence of Android phones in the market, the masses still love Nokia. They have been doing some promotions for the Lumia series like only recently, they draped a Boeing 737 in Lumia colours and flew a bunch of journalists Mumbai. The inside of the plane also had similar Lumia branding and stickers all over. You’ll notice however, that they aren’t really pimping the Lumia 710 for some reason, which is quite odd given that’s the more affordable handset.

Previous owners’ data found on 100 Motorola Xoom tablets sold online

Motorola’s Xoom may have been a pioneer in the Honeycomb tablet market but failed to make a big enough dent that left an impression. The company recently decided to sell the Xoom, well refurbished devices anyway, online at discounted prices. A total of about 6,200 Xoom tablets went up for sale through Woot.com. While the prices may have been a been a good bargain for new owners looking to invest in an Android tablet, it proved be slightly distressful for the devices’ previous owners.

Out of the 6200 odd that were on sale around 100 of them that were sold still seemed to have previous owners’ data. Although the exact details were not revealed, it is quite possible that it could have included highly personal and sensitive information such as photos, videos, email messages, passwords, chat logs, banking details and so on.

Better XOOM?
SOLD! But not Factory Reset

Motorola has admitted this and apologized for the inconvenience caused to the customers. The company said “Motorola is committed to rigorous data protection practices in order to protect its customers, and will continue to take the necessary steps to achieve this objective.”

Motorola would like to get back the 100 affected tablets sold between October and December 2011. To reduce the risk, the company is offering two years of Experian ProtectMyID Alert to those who returned the tablet anywhere between the period.

This mishap is a warning to those who return or sell their smartphones and tablets to dealers or anyone else. A simple thing to do before exchanging or reselling your handset/tablet etc. is to make sure you perform a factory data reset which erases all the sensitive information on the device and clears up the internal memory. If you’re giving away your memory card along with the device, make sure you format it and double-check to see if it’s empty. You could be in great risk should your personal data get into the wrong hands. This is something that you should keep in kind mind irrespective of the operating system, but do make sure to back up your data either on the cloud or a recommended PC suite.

Study says iOS apps crash more often than Android ones

The mobile platform wars are at their peak now. Android and iOS are the most popular platforms today and each one of them have their own set of followers. Each group feels that their favorite platform is more stable or has better apps, than the other. A mobile app statistic service, called Crittercism (www.crittercism.com) has now compiled data on the number of crashes per platform. Turns out it’s not Android, but in fact, iOS apps that crash more often. Forbes, has covered this report and it looks like apps running on the iPhone, iPod devices and the iPads may not be as stable as their Android counterparts. There are many who look at Android as being the more unorganized, because of the uncontrolled addition of apps on it.

Not the most stable platform around

Crittercism reports that as Apple and Google continue to release new updates to their respective operating systems, app developers have to keep up and develop new versions, test and bug fix apps. To see which platform's apps faced the most crashes, Crittercism studied the number of crashes between the 1st and the 15th of December last year. In all, some 23 versions of iOS were tested and some 33 versions of Android were tested. During that period, some 28.64 percent of all crashes were found to be on the iOS 5.0.1 operating system. During the time of the test, iOS 5.0.1 was still fairly new. But still, older and more matured versions of iOS also showed considerably large number of crashes as well. It’s also clear that not everyone updates their devices as soon as an update is released. In some cases, users don’t ever update.

No more loosing out on those spontaneous moments

Fact also is that not all users update their apps, the same way they choose not to update the operating system. Crittercism recorded some 214 million instances of app launches, but since the number of crashes were calculated based on the percentage and not just plain number comparison, this should reduce any chances of incorrect results. Android 4.0 has just recently been launched and when phones start receiving that update, the number of crashes on the brand new OS could possibly increase. Most of the crashes that Crittercism recorded on the iOS platform were primarily on the iPhone followed by smaller numbers on the iPad and the iPod Touch.

Apple to continue with online sales in Germany

Late last week, reports about Apple pulling off products from their online store in Germany began surfacing. The Cupertino-based company has been waging a lawsuit battle with Motorola Mobility in Germany, and in the final leg of the last year, was directed by the court to stop selling or distributing mobile devices that infringe certain Motorola cellular communications patents. Soon after, the German site of Apple stopped selling older models of iPhone and 3G-based iPads. These products, however, continued to sell on Apple retail stores across the country.

Sales to resume soon...

Now, according to latest reports, Apple is close to resuming with the sales of the above mentioned products, soon, after the court suspended the injunction. An Apple spokesperson, according to this report has confirmed the receiving of clearance. However, specifics of the same still remain unclear. In a statement, Apple spokesman Alan Hely stated that, "All iPad and iPhone models will be back on sale through Apple's online store in Germany shortly."

Both, Apple and Motorola Mobility have been waging war over a set of patents, which each one of them claims has been violated by the other. According to this report, Motorola Mobility stands firm stating that they have been "negotiating with Apple and offering the company "reasonable licensing terms and conditions since 2007." Apple, however, narrates a different tale.
